They say, nothing is more soothing than green surroundings. The concept of urban landscape traditionally embraces green public spaces, parks, squares, streets, boulevards, surplus areas, etc for plantation of beautiful trees and plants. In India, there has not been much emphasis on the subject till date. ‘Love you Trees’is a campaign working towards creating green urban landscapes in Mumbai that are aesthetically pleasing, functional and enhance green surroundings for the community, by planting beautiful trees and plants.
We need not much recount the benefits of trees and plants. Trees make life nicer. It is well known that spending time among trees and green spaces reduces the amount of stress that we carry around with us in our daily lives.Trees improve our air quality by filtering harmful dust and pollutants and give off oxygen that we need to breathe. Trees reduce the amount of storm water runoff, which reduces erosion and pollution in our waterways and may reduce the effects of flooding. Many species of wildlife depend on trees for habitat. Some indirect economic benefits of trees are that they reduce the energy we use.
Development and infrastructure projects do change the face of a city but at the price of its forest cover. With the increasing pace that trees are facing the axe in the name of public interest, we fail to recognize the environmental perils that await us, or we choose to comfortably ignore it. Mumbai has more vehicles than trees. According to the Environment Status Report (ESR) of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the city has 33.9 lakh registered vehicles, but only 31.6 lakh trees. The report states that with a population of 1.26 crore, the city has only one tree between four people. According to Indian Institute of Science (IISc) report from 2014, the ideal tree-human ratio should be seven trees for every person. Gandhinagar in Gujarat has four trees per person; Nashik has two trees.Countries like USA and China have 716 trees and 102 trees for one person respectively, according to a 2015 study.Environmentalists have raised their concern at the alarming tree-human ratio in the city, asserting that there is a grave need to preserve the green cover in the city.
‘Love you Trees’is a campaign that works towards enhancing green landscape of Mumbai by planting beautiful trees and plants partnering with MCGM, RWAs and various other stake holders. Plantation of trees & plants is a challenge but nurturing them with regular watering and care, is a much bigger challenge. Being a herculean task, it needs support from Individuals, Professionals, Businesses & Corporates. Financial support is the minimum that we seek. Participation is what we appreciate and request.
